Attributes a Great Family Dog Should Have

A family dog is a terrific addition to any household. If your kiddos have been asking for a pup of their own to care for, a family dog is a natural solution. However, there are certain factors you should look for when deciding what kind of dog to adopt. Temperament, breeding, any former owners, and many other factors determine whether a dog will be comfortable and well-behaved around children. Read on to explore three attributes an excellent family dog will have!

Gentle with Children

If you have young kids, it is extremely important to adopt a dog that is gentle with children. This idea may seem obvious, but it’s impossible to understate the importance of this trait. Unfortunately, children don’t always know how to play nicely. Any dog you consider should be tolerant enough that it will not retaliate if your kids pull its ears or step on its tail.

Playing Nice

The pup should also understand how to play with little ones gently. This issue is less important if your kids are a bit older, but it’s crucial if you still have toddlers at home. Some dogs can mean well but accidentally be too rough—especially puppies. Verifying that the breed is good with kids will help make your decision.

Plenty of Energy

High energy is another great attribute for a family dog to have! If your kids constantly run around in the backyard, they need a dog who can keep up with them. Choosing an active breed with a higher need for exercise will ensure that your new pup has the energy to keep up with your kiddos.

The Benefit of Having a High-Energy Pup

Before you know it, the kids and the dog will tire each other out. We call that a win-win!

Easy to Groom

Some dogs require more maintenance than others, and if you already have your hands full with getting the kids dressed and out the door, a high-maintenance pet might not be an option for you. That’s OK! There are plenty of breeds that make much less mess and don’t need as much grooming. Look for breeds that don’t shed or have any specialized care requirements.

Help with Hairy Pups

If you have your heart set on a particular breed but have no time to groom them, you can always enlist the help of a reputable groomer. You get your extra time back, and your dog still receives the care they need.

Now you know what to look for while searching for the perfect dog for your family! If you’re considering adopting a dog from the shelter, take a moment to read up on some of the challenges of adopting rescues.
