With snowflakes, hot cocoa, and holiday cheer, winter can be magical. But it can also be tough on our skin, sucking the moisture from it and leaving it dry, itchy, and flaky. But fear not—here are some ways to combat dry skin in the winter.

Moisturize Regularly

Combat dry skin by moisturizing regularly. Choose a rich, creamy moisturizer that contains ingredients such as shea butter, jojoba oil, or aloe vera. Apply it generously all over your body right after showering, as damp skin absorbs moisture better.

Use a Moisturizing Soap

Moisturizing soaps contain natural oils, butters, and moisturizers that nourish the skin, leaving it softer and smoother. Some soaps can even alleviate itchy skin and promote a healthier complexion.

Hydrate From Within

Drinking enough water is essential for skin nourishment. We tend to drink less water in the winter, as we crave warm beverages such as coffee and caffeinated tea. These drinks are comforting, but they can dehydrate the skin even more. Make sure to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. You can also opt for hydrating herbal teas such as chamomile or peppermint.

Protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is important all year round, including in the winter. Just because the sun isn’t as bright doesn’t mean its ultraviolet rays disappear. Applying sunscreen should remain a part of your winter skin routine.

Remember to protect all the parts of your body that can experience sun exposure, including your lips. Wearing lip balms that contain SPF 15 is an excellent tip for properly taking care of your lips.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all SPF, so finding one that fits your needs is important. Consider your skin type and choose the best formula for it—for example, oily or acne-prone skin can benefit from a lightweight formula.

Exfoliate Gently

Exfoliation can remove dead skin cells and give your skin a smoother, softer appearance. However, harsh scrubs can damage the skin’s barrier, leaving it more prone to dryness and irritation. Fortunately, opting for gentle exfoliants is a brilliant tip for combating dry skin in winter. Use a gentle scrub made from sugar, fine salt, or oatmeal once a week. Don’t forget to moisturize right after exfoliating to lock in hydration.

Create a Homemade Scrub

Instead of buying a scrub at the store, you can make your own! Combine half a cup of white sugar and half a cup of coconut oil. Seal the mixture in an airtight container and use the scrub whenever you want.
