The City of Detroit has declared today, June 23rd, as Buddy’s Pizza Day, in honor of the company’s 65th anniversary. Detroit City Council President Charles Pugh made it official by presenting a resolution to Robert Jacobs, owner of Buddy’s Pizza, at the restaurant’s original location. Today is also the day that Buddy’s unveil four specialty pizza pies created to support some of the area’s top cultural institutions.
“Today is a celebration of our history, our city and out longstanding support of Detroit’s arts and culture,” said Jacobs. “We’re so proud to call this Buddy’s Pizza Day in Detroit”.
As part of the festivities today the four-item Motor City Pizza Collection will be introduced. The collection features pizzas named for the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Zoo, the Henry Ford and the Parade Company. They are on menus beginning today, and each one sold will generate $1 for its charitable organization that benefits the 4 Cultural Institutions mentioned above.
Lucky me, I had the chance to taste this delicious collection of pizza. Here they are:
The Detroit Institute of Arts – topped with spinach and artichoke blend, capers, roasted tomatoes, and parmesan.
The Henry Ford – Topped with red onion, seasoned ground beef, smoked bacon, bleu cheese, tomato basil sauce and parmesan.
The Parade Company – Topped with fresh carrots, sliced grape tomatoes, tomato basil sauce and parmesan.
The Detroit Zoo – Topped with fresh basil, pine nuts and tomato basil sauce.
Also debuting today is a pizza pie designed to appeal to Motor City loyalists: Kid Rock’s Badass Detroiter pizza, featuring a crust made with Rock’s American Badass Beer. It will be available only at the original 6 Mile restaurant location on Fridays and Saturdays, starting this week.
I am having a really hard time picking my favorite one but I really liked the Kid Rock pie and the Henry Ford pie. They were all so good!
Buddy’s values all of those who have come through its doors over the past 65 years and this is just one way the restaurant’s staff and owners hope to give back. If you have a favorite Buddy’s pizza experience or story to share, they invite you to do so. Buddy’s Pizza is collecting Buddy’s Memories on their Facebook page and Twitter feed.
I was invited to Buddy’s 65th Birthday event. All opinions are mine and not influenced by anyone or anything.
