Wild Winter Weekends at the Detroit Zoo

Detroit Zoo Wild Winter Weekends

Are you someone who just visits the zoo when the weather is warm? Well, winter is fun at the zoo too, especially when you visit their Wild Winter Weekends!  The Detroit Zoo’s Wild Winter Weekends are themed weekends for children of all ages that include both outdoor and indoor activities.

All children’s activities Saturday, January 20th and Saturday, February 3, 2018 are FREE with Zoo admission. Special activities are held at the Ford Education Center from 10a-2pm on both days. The Arctic Cafe and Starbucks are also open during these events.

Children and families are invited to enjoy their favorite indoor habitats along with special activities, zookeeper talks, arts and crafts and much more! The January 20th theme was Arctic Adventure. Children were able to create polar bear masks, toss bean bags into a polar bear’s cut out belly, receive arctic tattoos, listen in on arctic zookeeper talks, view ice carvings and much more. If you missed the January date, that’s okay February 3rd is fast approaching and there is still time to make plans to go before Wild Winter Weekends are over.

Will the animals be out during your visit?  Absolutely!  Some aren’t fans of our Michigan weather but some love it! Animals that don’t mind the winter include; the gray wolves, Japanese macaques, camels, tigers, polar bears, wolverines, and arctic foxes.  The Detroit Zoo also keeps many of the indoor habitats open during the winter such as the Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat, Matilda R. Wilson Free-Flight Aviary, Butterfly Garden, Holden Reptile Conservation Center, Great Apes of Harambee, the Penguinarium and the National Amphibian Conservation Center.

Detroit Zoo is located at 8450 West 10 Mile Rd. Royal Oak, Mi. General admission tickets can be purchased here
