Homemade Glazed Doughnut Recipe

Sometimes you just want a good doughnut! Am I right? Perfecting a good homemade doughnut recipe can be difficult but this is a recipe you can do and feel good about the yummy outcome.  Especially when you take your first bite!

Homemade Glazed Doughnut Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2  .25 ounce envelopes active dry yeast
  • 5 cups all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • 1 qt vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ cup lukewarm milk
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 2 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 tablespoons hot water
  • Sprinkles

Directions:

  1. Sprinkle yeast over the warm water, and let stand for 5 minutes or until thick and foamy.
  2. Mix together the yeast mixture with milk, salt, sugar, eggs, shortening, and 2 cups of flour. Mix for 3-4 minutes at low speed. Beat in remaining flour using only 1/2 cup at a time. Mix until the dough is no longer sticky. Knead dough for 5 minutes, or until smooth. Place the dough into a greased bowl and cover. Let dough rise. Dough will be ready when finger indention remains when testing consistency.
  3. Place ready dough on floured surface and gently roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a doughnut cutter. Use flour on cutter to avoid sticking. Let cut doughnuts sit out to rise until double.
  4. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in confectioners’ sugar and vanilla. Remove from heat, and stir in hot water one tablespoon at a time until the icing is somewhat thin, but not watery. How much you use is up to you. Be sure not to make it too thin.
  5. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large skillet to 350 degrees. Carefully slide doughnuts into the hot oil using a wide spatula. Promptly turn doughnuts over as they rise to the surface to cook evenly. Fry doughnuts for equal amounts of time on each side until lightly golden. Do not leave doughnuts unattended. Remove from hot oil, to drain on a wire rack.
  6. To decorate – dip doughnuts into the glaze while still hot, and set onto wire racks to drain off excess with parchment paper underneath (easy for clean up). Sprinkle with your favorite sprinkles and candy toppings and let cool to harden.

Serve and enjoy!!!!
