I do a weekly post on Facebook to share the things I am grateful and thankful for and ask my friends to share as well. This week I shared this:
“I am thankful I have legs to dance with, arms to hug with, a mind to make decisions with, a mouth to smile with and a heart to love with. What are you thankful for?”
I focused this week’s thankful post on body parts after a recent trip to see a loved one that had lost limbs. It made me stop and think about how grateful I am to be a healthy woman.
I think we take for granted the things we have that others may not, like our arms and legs. I can’t imagine not being able to put my arms around my friends and family. I take joy in expressing my love in this way.
What if one day your legs didn’t work anymore. Your ability to dance, to even walk was taken away. I sit at my desk ALL. DAY. LONG. I take for granted my ability to get up and stretch my legs, walk around the square on a beautiful Fall day and just walk into a co-workers office to catch up on their life.
What if you didn’t have the ability to make decisions for yourself anymore. What if you had to depend on a caretaker to speak for you, feed you and ultimately make decisions for you ,whether you liked them or not.
Right now my decisions are my own. I can say yes or no and each decision I make is mine to make. I can set my own destiny and live with my mistakes.
Today, I reminded myself not to take these things for granted and to appreciate the little things that many don’t get the chance to.
