Detroit Mayor Dave Bing presented Elmo with a key to the city last week at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and proclaimed January 28 “Sesame Street Live Day”.
The Detroit Mommies were invited to see Elmo, who along with Grover are in town through February 15 for their presentation of “Elmo’s Green Thumb” at the Fox Theatre, meet with Mayor Bing and his wife Yvonne in the Pistons Reading Court.
After the presentation the Bing’s granddaughter Caris read to the children. Children’s patients also received a copy of “Sesame Street ABC and 123” and bouquets of tulips were handed out to the parents.
The Mayor Bing Inaugural Committee bought out a January 28 performance of “Elmo’s Green Thumb” and distributed over 4,500 tickets to Detroit youth and their families through various charitable and non-profit organizations in the Detroit Area.
Mayor Bing is committed to renewing the spirit of Detroit and believes including children in the celebrations is a great way to do so.
“Elmo’s Green Thumb” follows Elmo and friends as they try to find a new home for Elmo’s sunflower Sunny who he has grown from a seed.
