There’s Still Time to Pick Blueberries

If you haven’t gone to pick blueberries yet, there’s still time.  I would, however, call ahead to your favorite place to make sure their berries are ripe.  My 3 daughters & I went blueberry picking yesterday.  The bushes were loaded & we got 30 lbs of berries in just under 2 hours.  I’m sure there are people who could beat us on time, but I’m not sure we can count the 6yo, as she did mostly hiding in the shade and running around checking to see how much everyone had in their buckets.  I guess she was the site supervisor.

So far, I’ve frozen most of the blueberries for winter (remember the snowflake rule?).  My 14yo daughter made blueberry pancakes today and is promising muffins tomorrow.  They are her specialty.  She is the blueberry queen in our home.

Freezing blueberries is SO easy.  I just make sure there are no bad ones.  It happens, especially if you’re picking w/little ones..  Next, remove any stems, sticks, etc.  Then wash the berries.  I lay them on a towel and put another towel over them to pat dry a little.  Then, I just lay them out in a single layer on a jelly roll pan or cookie sheet.  They freeze pretty quickly and easily come off the pan to put in a freezer bag.  This way, they are “individual” instead of a massive blueberry clump.

This year, I picked berries at Rowe’s in Vassar, MI.  They are charging .90/lb. for their berries  and I got some gorgeous berries there.  We left a lot on the bushes, though, so if you’re in the area, give them a call.

Go on, get out there and get some blueberries.  All those antioxidants for .90/lb.  How can you pass it up?
