Typically, when the fall season starts, we start to see pumpkins everywhere. Front porches are decorated beautifully with pumpkins, home bakers and families start baking pumpkin recipes and pumpkins are in abundance at the farmer’s markets and grocery stores. During the fall season who doesn’t love seeing a beautiful pumpkin?!

  • Did you know? Pumpkins are technically a fruit? It’s true! The reason why pumpkins are technically a fruit is because they have seeds.
  • Antarctica is the only place pumpkins do not grow. Antartica’s conditions do not make it suitable for growing pumpkins, but they do grow in all other continents. China, India, Mexico, and Ukraine produce the most pumpkins in the world.
  • There are 45 different types of pumpkins.
  • The U.S. Produces 1.5 Billion Pounds of Pumpkins Every Year.
  • The United States is big in growing pumpkins too! Most of the pumpkin supply in the U.S. reside in California, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
  • Most of the 1.5 billion pounds of U.S. pumpkins grown each year are sold during the month of October.
  • Pumpkins were first named in 1584 by French explorer Jacques Cartier. He called them “gros melons,” which translated to “pompions” in English.
  • Pumpkin puree sold in cans at the grocery stores are filled with squash.
  • Each pumpkin produces close to 500 seeds.
  • One cup of pumpkin holds 49 calories and several vitamins including potassium, Vitamin K, Vitamin E, folate and niacin.
